Throughout the history of the United States, sportsbetting has been a popular (and, mostly underground) pastime. The jurisdictions that were spared this prohibition were those who already had sports betting (only Nevada, at the time) as well as a few states that had Commercial casinos, though these states (such as New Jersey) did not avail themselves of the right to start sports betting operations in the time they’d have been allowed.įurthermore, a few states were extended the right to offer, “ Sports Lotteries,” which are essentially just offering parlay bets through the lottery department. The Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) was a Federal-level law that went into effect in 1992 which prohibited sports betting in the majority of U.S. In many cases within the country, this expansion has featured not only poker and casino games, but also online sports betting! The United States has rapidly expanded its legalized and regulated (Commercial) online casino footprint in recent years.
